Thinking about working from home? I’d say think again. No – this is a not a blog about dissuading you from telecommuting. This is just me sharing how you can be successful if you choose this path.
There are a lot of things that you’d love about working from home. Not waking up early, no need to commute to your workplace, flexible hours, not to mention the chance to travel more often, and my list can just go on and on. But, it’s not as stress-free as you thought it would be. Let me tell you why.
- Distractions. It’s on the top of my list. I’ve mentioned this in one of my previous posts. Household chores, your bed, television, open internet access (Youtube and Twitter ring a bell?), and sometimes, too much flexibility.
- This job actually requires you to THINK. It’s definitely NOT a no-brainer job, as a lot of us perceive online contracting to be. You need decision making and analytical skills, bright ideas and a LOT of brain power.
- Sometimes you just need PEOPLE to be there. I’ve been used to working in a corporate office, seeing and speaking to colleagues. When you work remotely, you lose all of that. Everything has to be done virtually. I’m not complaining, but it’s just one thing that I miss.
Generally, working from home is awesome. You enjoy the best of both worlds – work and “me”/family time. But if you are considering this path, make sure you are prepared. Most importantly, understand that this is a BIG responsibility, given the challenges that I just mentioned.
Telecommuting may not be for everybody, but if you feel you’re a good fit, you are probably not going to regret joining the world of online contractors.
